Who we are
LandSleuth is run by Yan Horobin, a sole trader, of 2 Bank Cottages, Forest Hill, Oxford OX33 1EA. We are the data controller for personal data collected through this site, registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office under number [ICO registration number]. Contact us about anything in this notice at hello@landsleuth.co.uk.
We collect as little as we can. You can use the free parts of the site without giving us any personal information.
What we collect and why
| Data | Why we use it | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To create your account, send sign-in codes and send emails about your membership | Contract |
| Membership and payment status: whether you’re a member, renewal date, Stripe customer reference | To give members access and manage renewals. Card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them. | Contract |
| Payment records | Tax and accounting records | Legal obligation |
| When you agreed to immediate access | Evidence that you asked for access to start at once and waived the 14-day cancellation right | Legal obligation and legitimate interests |
| Whether you want news emails | To send occasional emails about new features and offers, only if you didn’t tick the box to refuse them when you joined, or you switched them on. Every one has an unsubscribe link, and you can switch them off from your account. | Legitimate interests |
| The places you look up | Sent to the government’s Planning Data platform and postcodes.io to find information about that spot. We don’t store them against you. | Legitimate interests |
| A scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address, with a daily count | To limit how many free lookups one person can make each day. We can’t turn it back into your IP address, and delete it after 7 days. | Legitimate interests |
| Feature suggestions and the email you give with them | To read your idea and reply to you about it. We don’t add you to any mailing list. | Legitimate interests |
| Emails you send us | To reply to you | Legitimate interests |
Where we rely on legitimate interests, it’s to run the site securely and fairly, and we’ve kept the data to the minimum needed. We don’t use your data for advertising, sell it, or make automated decisions about you.
Who we share it with
We use these companies to run the site. They process data only on our instructions:
- Stripe: payments and subscriptions
- Resend: sending sign-in and membership emails
- Vercel: hosting the website
- Neon: our database
- postcodes.io: looking up postcode locations
- The Planning Data platform (MHCLG): title outlines and planning information for the places you look up
- Sentry: error reports when something on the site breaks (technical details only, no IP addresses or emails)
Some of these providers are based in, or use servers in, the United States. Where data leaves the UK it is protected by the UK–US data bridge or the UK’s approved standard contract clauses. We may also share data if the law requires it.
When you view a map, your browser loads the background map images directly from OpenStreetMap and, for the satellite view, Esri, and searches postcodes directly with postcodes.io. Like any website, they receive your IP address to send those images. Street View links open on Google’s site. Their own privacy policies apply.
Cookies
We only use essential cookies: one to keep you signed in, and short-lived ones that make sign-in secure. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so we don’t need to ask for consent.
How long we keep it
- Account: while you have an account. When you ask us to delete it, we do so within 30 days.
- Payment records and the cancellation-waiver record: 6 years after the payment, as tax law requires.
- Your news email choice: while you have an account. If you unsubscribe, we keep a note of that so we don’t email you again.
- Hashed IP counts: 7 days.
- Emails you send us: up to 2 years after the conversation ends.
- Feature suggestions: up to 2 years. The hashed IP address stored with each one to stop spam: 7 days.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to have it sent to you in a portable format. Email hello@landsleuth.co.uk. We’ll reply within one month, free of charge.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
Changes
If we change this notice, we’ll update the date at the top, and email members about important changes. See also our terms of use.
