Buy the strip next to you

Can I buy the land next to my house?

Find out who owns the verge, strip or patch of land beside your home, and how to ask to buy it.

How it works

  1. Click your house on the map, then choose Land next to it.
  2. We compare your title outline with every registered title around it. Land along your boundary that sits in no title at all shows up in blue, and each neighbouring title gets a number.
  3. You get the likely type of each strip, who to ask, a step-by-step guide and a letter to send.

Who owns the land next to my house?

Often, yes. Councils, housing associations and developers regularly sell small pieces of spare land to the people next door, usually to become garden. But it depends on who owns it and what it’s for:

  • Grass verges and pavements are usually public highway. They’re the hardest to buy, because the public right to use them has to be removed first.
  • Council or housing association land, such as amenity grass on an estate, is the most common kind sold.
  • Land with no registered owner may still belong to a builder, a past owner, or the Crown. Our Unregistered Land Finder explains the options.
